The winners of this year’s National Movie Awards have now been revealed and the nation now knows which films and which stars British cinema audiences loved most in 2008.

The winners were announced at a glittering awards ceremony at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Monday evening, attended by stars such as Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue, Maria Bello, Emma Watson, Jason Statham and Alex Pettyfer.

TV audiences were able to see the whole ceremony – which included a world premiere preview of the forthcoming James Bond movie Quantum of Solace – on ITV1 the following day.

The winners of the 2008 National Movie Awards were: –

  • Superhero – The Dark Knight
  • Musical – Mamma Mia!
  • Action/Adventure – Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 
  • Comedy – Juno 
  • Family – Wall–E
  • Performance (Male) – Johnny Depp: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Of Fleet Street
  • Performance (Female) – Meryl Streep: Mamma Mia! 

In addition, Pixar Animation Studios picked up ‘Special Recognition’ award, presented to them by actor Samuel L Jackson, for their work on a succession of hugely successful and trailblazing films such as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille and Wall-E.
