UK cinema sites shortlisted for the two ‘cinema of the year’ categories at the 2018 Screen Awards were announced today, representing a diverse range of locations and business models.

For the last four years, the Screen Awards event has considered two separate categories for cinema of the year, representing companies with 24 screens or fewer and 25 screens or more respectively. Sponsored by Vista/Veezi, the Awards present a rare opportunity to celebrate and shine a light on best practice amongst the UK cinema operators.

This year, for the first time, the shortlists (and eventual winners) were chosen by a specially-convened panel of cinema operators, supported by colleagues from Vista/Veezi and Screen magazine.

The shortlists announced today are as follows:

24 screens or fewer

Broadway Cinema & Theatre, Letchworth
Depot Cinema, Lewes
Filmhouse Cinema, Edinburgh
Hebden Bridge Picture House
Rio Cinema, Dalston
The Picture House, Uckfield
Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

25 screens or more

Cineworld Leicester Square
Cineworld Stevenage
Crouch End Picturehouse
Curzon Oxford
Everyman Chelmsford
Kings Cinema, Kingsbridge
ODEON Luxe, Edinburgh West
Showcase Cinema de Lux, Southampton

Welcoming today’s announcement, UK Cinema Association CEO Phil Clapp said:

‘The panel of cinema operators and industry partners brought together to agree these shortlists would I know join me in saying how difficult that task was given the diversity and excellence each nominee presented. I offer warmest congratulations to all of those chosen here.’

The winners in the two categories, as well as the recipient of this year’s UKCA Exhibition Achievement Award, will be announced at a special ceremony on London on Thursday 29 November. More details here.
