This year’s UK National Cinema Day proved another major draw for fans of the Big Screen, latest figures show.
Leading box office analysts Comscore report that cinemas taking part in the event saw 1 million admissions, further proof of the nation’s love for its favourite leisure activity.
The most popular films on the day were recent release across a range of genres, from family hits Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 to action film Deadpool and Wolverine to the drama It Ends With Us to the sci-fi horror Alien: Romulus. Also in the mix were the recently re-released Anniversary editions of the animation Coraline and sci-fi classic The Terminator.
Early findings from nationwide survey work undertaken by Comscore with those who participated showed that while some were undoubtedly attracted by the special discount pricing of tickets, others also enjoyed the opportunity to watch a number of different films across the day and to bring along friends and family for the unique shared viewing experience that only the Big Screen can offer.
National Cinema Day was developed by the cross-industry body Cinema First and supported by the Film Distributors’ Association and the UK Cinema Association.
Welcoming these initial numbers, Iain Jacob, Chair of Cinema First, said:
“National Cinema Day is intended to celebrate the nation’s love of cinema-going and to say a ‘big thank’ you to audiences through providing a great offer to everybody in the UK.
This third edition of the event confirms its status as an established part of the annual cinema calendar, with cinema-goers in their masses now taking up the opportunity to see multiple films on the Big Screen across the day.
Thank you to everybody who came and to everyone working in cinemas across the UK for making it such a fun, inclusive and memorable day.”
