Energy efficiency and environmental management remains important commercial, operational and ethical issues for UK cinema operators.
This is an area in which the Association has supported its members for a number of years, looking to help them in both reducing their ‘carbon footprint’ and their utility costs.
In partnership with the consultancy Energise, the Association has worked to benchmark energy use and share good practice amongst members on what they can do further to reduce their outgoings in this area. The results of a recent project involving site case studies suggest that many cinemas could make significant energy savings with relatively small-scale investments and changes to their working practices. The Association is now looking to deliver this work and associated benefits to the wider membership.
The Association is also working with the British Film Institute and other partners in developing a set of sector objectives over the next three years, in line with the Industry Standard BS8909 (the British sustainability standard for the film industry, which is hoped to be adopted across the wider sector).
